first thing you want is a statically-compiled dpkg and apt-get, and a
handful of patch and awk scripts to save out some config settings and
identify packages you want to track, and mostly you're good to go.
The process is hardly massively clean, you end up with a lot of legacy
RH files left, but that's rarely a bad thing when all said and done.
you can pretty much do the same in reverse from Debian to RH.
Mostly, the big worry is libC replacements, but as GlibC has gotten
better about version differential in recent years, it's become far less
of a 'brain surgery' option than it used to be.
And it's certainly a great demo of why every linux admin should keep a
library of their most vital tools, in statically-compiled versions,
handy - makes things like this far less hassle.
