My reasoning for a separate /boot partition is for robustness. If /boot is
part of a huge filesystem, then if that filesystem becomes corrupted, it is
possible that the kernel or initram images may be overwritten. If /boot is
separated from all of the normal filesystem traffic, then the chances of it
being corrupted is much less. Of course, with a couple of old kernels around,
it's more likely that at least one of them is not overwritten, but there's
still just one image of grub itself.
I typically have /boot mounted read-only, which screws up updates with new
kernels, but gives me that added sense of security...
