Can you use your USB keyboard to go into the BIOS? Like, hit DEL or F2 
or whatever during the POST, and then use the arrow keys, enter, ESC 
keys etc. to navigate through the BIOS screens? If you can, then I would 
think you would also be able to use the USB keyboard on the GRUB screens.

The USB keyboard is supposed to be supported by the BIOS until the OS 
USB drivers are loaded, or in the case of some stupid OS like DOS there 
may be no USB drivers. Maybe your keyboard is somehow not compatible 
with your motherboard's BIOS. Could you try a different one?
