So, to let you know I went with an Nvidia GTS250 that Dan Babb gave me free.  There are lots of 
reasons you might want a different card but I like the idea of reusing things rather than throwing 
them out (I reused an old case for the computer this goes in too).

This seems to require non-Free drivers from Nvidia.  But I'm really only running XFCE right now (and 
maybe KDE4 later) so this isn't really necessary and the drivers are readily available if I need them.

I learned that video cards may get their own power connection now and an old 300W supply with the 
appropriate adapters wasn't up to the task (I'm probably not using 300W but the 12v current was 
likely too high).  But a $25 600W came with all the right connections (and for the MB too), it's 
quiet, and ventilates well.
