Some of my co workers use awesome, and quite like it. Personally, I don't
like tiling WMs.

My solution to the quirks of Unity was to switch back to Gnome. Gnome 3
isn't perfect, I miss gnome 2, but it's good enough. Gnome 3 with some mods
via tweak tool should get you into a good state.
