But the jet engine fan adds to the cool factor. Jokes aside, if you look for a "smart" switch it will probably do what you need. Most smart switches I have used in the path have low end CPUs but provide things like VLAN, port mirroring and link aggregation groups. The lower end CPU cuts down on cooling requirements. <br>

Your description leads me to guess that this is a packet loss issue.<br>
Some dumb small port count switches are notorious for accepting a<br>
packet and then not bothering to forward it. You might just swap in a<br>
slightly up market manageable switch. At least then you can mirror a<br>
port into your analyzer to see what is really going on.<br>
