Greetings, all. I've been having trouble with the sound for mp3 playback on my F17 laptop install. Basically, it stutters. It'll play for a little bit (seconds), then repeats the same section for a while, then starts again. I thought flash (through chrome) was playing fine, but I gave watchtheguild.com another shot just now, and it's acting up. *sigh*

I'd seen the problem in the last couple of Ubuntu releases (12.04, 11.10), and the last time I remember it working well was about Ubuntu 10.04.

The question: How do I go about troubleshooting this?

I'd seen a large Fedora argument about a standard library change that broke 64 bit mp3 playback, but 1) I'm on 32 bit, and 2) the thread was killed and doesn't seem to have come back up. Pulseaudio comes up in forums as a possible problem, but while on Ubuntu I tried killing it, and all I did was make my laptop sound soft keys not work anymore.

I'm relatively distribution agnostic, but I'd rather not have a stack of six to keep trying until sound works again.

This is the audio device I have:
$ lspci | grep -i audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)

Thanks in advance.

--
Andrew Diederich
andrewdied@gmail.com
