Phillip wrote that the meetings were mostly over the heads of
many of the attendee's. This was true for me also. While I was
interested in becoming a power user of Linux, my primary reason to
switch to Linux was to support open source and for stability.
Remember Vista?

I wasn't one who was drawn to the meetings by a noted speaker
every month. While there's nothing wrong with this, I'm guessing
from an organization stand point, for the organizers, this must
have increased headache's and logistics of needing a meeting room
with projector capability, etc, etc ... My thoughts on starting
back up are thus: Maybe you don't need to meet every month with a
large and capable conference room. It's hard to meet 12 times a
year in our fast paced culture. Maybe starting back up small and
simple with setting a schedule, maybe a winter schedule if
everybody is to busy in the summer, or vice versa, and posting it
well in advance could generate much interest.

Pick some topics. Install fest's are great, but after install fest
the needs of the users might be:

LOGS:
Where are logs, why do I need to monitor them. How do I monitor
and what do I look for when reviewing my logs?

SECURITY:
How do I secure my new Debian install? Is it just like Windows
where I install a good anti-virus and obliviously go about my way?

COMPILING:
As a noob, I would have liked to have someone show me how to
compile any small and simple open source program, just as an
example of how to do it. Who know's where this could lead me to in
the future.

VERIFYING DOWNLOADS:
What's all this SHA256 stuff? Why is it important and how do I
verify what I've downloaded?

Sure I can find many articles online that cover these topics, but
I never have someone to turn to when the (sometimes outdated) step
by step instructions I find online don't work. Having someone to
look over your shoulder while doing this at a meeting would be
much better.

Turning noobs into power users can build comradery and make new
connections and just as importantly, give us a good reason to get
out of the house. It doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to
work.

I like checking in on the CLUE posting from time to time and
would like to help but I have recently moved out of state so I'm
not able to help. I'm in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area and I
have looked for linux groups up here but cant find anything other
than specialized groups on Meetup. Who know's maybe I start a
Linux noobs meetup up here!

Best of luck to you all and thanks for the help I received when I
did come to the meetings.

Very few people were coming near the end and it wasn't
easy finding speakers. When McAffee closed their office
here, we didn't look for a new home. Maybe if we held an
occasional meeting when someone wanted to give a talk, but
the irregularity might mean that people wouldn't remember
when to meet. It might also be hard to find a place that
would let us do this.
