Just wandering around the web ...

Pricewatch lists a few Epson XGA/1200lum models for around $1200-1500.
Toshibas appear to be more expensive.

I've never heard of InFocus: $1300:

-- hey, this one has a max resolution of 1600x1200.

So, it looks like our price/performance goal is easily attainable (at
least buying on the web -- brick'n'mortar might not be as good.
