Admins,
I believe that we need to less critical of people who are not following our
[unstated] list rules.
CLUE is an *educational* and advocacy group. Most people are acting out of
ignorance, rather than a genuine malevolence or purported laziness. Some
even post from crappy email clients that do not allow them to easily follow
conventions.
In short: We forget to obey the first rule of netetiquette:
1. Remember the human.
So, to make things more productive, I would like a single volunteer to :
A) Summarize the general rules of etiquette as they apply (by tradition) to
our email lists. This shouldn't be too hard, perhaps 2-5 statements. For
example, we don't allow commercial solicitations and we prefer if people do
not 'top post'. There, I've already given 2. More than 5 and we sound like
the IRS.
B) Post these statements to clue-admin for comment.
C) Add these statements to the pages:
1) Change the mailman 'welcome' message.
2) Change the mailman list page (http://clue.denver.co.us/mailman/listinfo/).
3) Change the mailman 'reminder' message.
Contact me for access to change the mailman list pages.
D) Announce to all lists that we have these new GUIDELINES for list etiquette.
Above all, we are trying to advocate Linux. When we are critical over minor
issues such as a breach of [unstated] list etiquette, how can people accept
our message that Linux [and open source] is an open and inclusive?
- From an outsider's perspective, we appear divisive and petty.
