"Linux is simply a fad that has been generated by the media and is
destined to fall by the wayside in time. Windows 2000 will gradually
overtake the Linux share in  the server market. In fact, the advent of
Linux has spurred Microsoft's developers to move up a gear. The
arrival of new competitors in applications or operating  systems
development provides us at Microsoft with the driving force to create
even better software products."

To me, this feels like projection.  If you swap "Linux" and "Windows 2000"
in the above statement, you may find it's more accurate.  Take, for example,
the results of the NetCraft web survey at http://www.netcraft.co.uk/survey/

Apache is at 60.04% this month (up .35% from last month), and IIS is
at 20.09 (down .51% from last month).  IIS growth hit a plateu in early
1998 and has basicly stayed there.  I find it amusing that every
substantial growth in IIS is followed within a few months by a more
substantial fall and a corresponding Apache growth.

Apache growth has been fairly steady since 1996 (before which it was
rather rapid).

So, MS (not suprisingly) says that Linux is a fad and Windows will
take it over in servers.  I haven't seen any evidence to support
that though.

They're having a hard enough time selling the newer Windows into the
DESKTOP environment.  Why would they suddenly take over the server
market?

This reminds me of the 1930s.  War-weary nations had their heads in the
sand because they just didn't want to deal with the reality of another
conflict.  While "exchange officers" were coming back from Germany
amazed at how it's soldiers were gearing up, the diplomatic missions
were reporting that chancelor Hitler was such a nice guy.  Nobody
wanted to face the reality of another conflict, just as I suspect
it's more popular at Microsoft to portray Linux as a fad (both
internally and externally).

Of course, what happened in the 1940s was that other nations were
caught with their pants down...  I wonder wether this is just a
public face that MS is putting on, while their internal war machinery
is going full bore, or if they're actually believing this internally...

Sean has surely hit the nail on the head.

When I read the quote, I thought back to--what was it, 197? when 
Time magazine declared God to be dead.

The Christian intellectuals deflected by saying, "God is dead.  
Long live God!"  The question had been asked and answered by 
those who mattered not, and this was precisely the Christians' 
way of saying "Let's get back to work."

The point is that we are the (linux) zealots and intellectuals 
here in an analogous situation.

I declare that "Linux is dead.  Long live Linux!"
