Jeff, 

The sad part is the typical thinking of PHBs: automate until you get rid
of people, not "how can I redeploy my IT workers to get even more
efficiency out of my business processes?"

However, the IT folks need to figure out where things are headed and
retool themselves so they don't get like the Luddites and become
LuddITes.
