Don't know about Phoebe Snow, but I saw a really interesting interview
with Lorena McKennitt on ITN.  She has her own record label, and runs
it herself.  She can do this, because she was careful early in her
career to not lock herself into deals that would keep her strapped into
the record companies.  She avoided greed early on, and can now enjoy the
benefits of being patient.

I think most artists see those initial dollar signs, and sign without
thinking about how much they're giving up.  A million dollars sounds
like a lot, if you don't know about the ten or twenty million you're
giving up.

I know artists get screwed by the labels, but it's the artists that
perpetuate the system.  Of course, it's easy for me to be critical
because nobody is waving a million dollar chack in front of my face.
