As a follow-up... When you have a lot of pictures, you may want to manage 
them.  The command-line is not ideal because you are not able to preview 
pictures and then work with them easily.  Sure you can view them in a file 
explorer or browser.

So, I went looking for some software to build photo albums.  There are a 
million php and perl scripts for building thumbnail photo albums.  I wanted 
something like a desktop application that I can use to create, edit, and 
annotate the album and *then* save as HTML.

As if the developer read my mind for this set of features -- I highly 
recommend 'Album Shaper' - http://albumshaper.sourceforge.net/.  It's a 
simple application that allows you to group pictures into albums.  It saves 
your albums into HTML slideshows and thumbnail views.   Drag-n-drop 
arrangement of photos.  Add multiple photos to album in one command.  Very 
easy to use and although it's still alpha, it seems to have few bugs.
