The problem is probably not X.  I don't think the new features of X added
much more size to the program.  Gnome and KDE are another matter, however.
 They are both heavyweight desktops that require a lot of memory than
something like XCFE or WindowMaker, but they do add functionality to
programs that take advantage of them.  So I guess the first question is,
can you add more memory to your computer?
