Maybe on things with certain hardware.  But I can testify to trying to 
install XP on a machine that was supposed to have 2000 on it, and it 
turned out to be NOTICABLY slower.  All you have to do is look at the 
"requirements" on a Windows pacakge:  they usually double with each version.
