The easiest thing here would be to use CUPS on both systems.  CUPS does 
very nicely with JetDirect cards and is the default print management 
tool in newer OS X installations and many Linux distros.

As far as color laser printers - I expect most will understand 
PostScript, but, my experience here is limited.
