Concerning your general transport
problems, consider a bicycle.

I have noticed bicycle racks on
the front of RTD buses; so, a
bicycle might be a partial solution.

A commuter bicycle would have fatter
tires/wheels/frame than a distance 
bicycle, so it can take more bumps. 
To keep friction low, the tires have
a normal tread, not aggressive tread
(nobbies), as found on a mountain bicycle.
