[clue-talk] iPhone Madness [Update]

If only Symbian wasn't so slow.

Still most of the feature-laden phones have been GSM phones and that means a choice between T-Mobile and AT&T. Even with number portability we're still far away from phone portability. This technology division is one layer of vendor lock-in. It's a sad comment though that the iPhone with it's limited feature set is a breath of fresh air in this stagnant US market. It's just amazing how far we lag in terms of useful features when compared to Japan (see http://www.tranism.com/weblog/2007/01/sorry_iphone_ja.html). YouTube is not a useful feature. Using your phone as a credit/cash card is. Granted Japan does have a logistical advantage, namely a country the size of California where the population is located in 1/3 of the land area, 10% of which is in Tokyo alone. So it's really not that hard for them to roll out new infrastructure in a timely manner. While they've since moved on to 4G tech, we're still lagging behind in 2G, 3G if you're in a major metro area.

Too bad the general population doesn't realize what's out there. Sometimes it really is greener on the other side.

I'm in awe of Apple's branding, that's for sure.

I admit iPhone is actually mildly interesting, but the hype far outstrips
what Apple has actually done in "innovation", IMHO. Great for them, but I'm
not buying first-gen, based on their track record with ipods...I think the
winner for me would be a combination of a touchscreen along with real
keypad. It allows expansion via adding buttons on screen like Dennis
mentioned, but also provides a real keyboard.

If you find and read the digg comments on this one, you'll see lots of
people mention that the N95 costs roughly the same, and yet has many more
features, like GPS, 3G, not locked into a vendor that cooperated with
illegal wiretaps, shoots DVD-quality movies, etc.
