Rex,

I have no particulars on footprint - probably very dependent on cpu
architecture.

If you cross-compile C or C++ you will nly need you static app or shared
libs on the running host.

With PostgreSQL and mySQL, you can either add disk space for specific db's/
tables on the fly,
or move all db's and tables to a new location - either way you need to
restart the database process, which may impact transactions in process.
Generally well-documented and no can of worms.
