[clue-talk] need new laptop

Four laptops ago, I had a Dell Inspiron 8100, which was beautiful, fast for the time, durable and reliable. It ran for about 3 years or so, and then my brother-in-law "borrowed" a fan out of it. He ordered the new fan and put it in, but it never worked right after that.

Three laptops ago, I had an HP. I forget the model. It failed after more than a year of use, I sent it in, and after 3 weeks or so "at the shop" HP gave up on it and sent me a new one. The replacement also failed, but after only several months of use. After two weeks "at the shop", HP gave up on that one, and sent me ~another~ new laptop. Currently, I have a dv9000 with two SATA drives, a dual-core, a half-gig nVidia, and 3GB of RAM (the max this one will take). My wireless and sound and the remote control work, but not the webcam. I've been running this one for over a year, and it's still perfect. A little hot now and then, but no stability or performance issues.

The next laptop I buy will have no OS, or Linux pre-installed. I will pay attention to max RAM, and I will buy the best available of all the "hard-to-upgrade" parts. I will consider geeks.com, eBay, System76, Dell, and HP, probably in that order. I don't see myself ever buying Toshiba, Hibachi, or Sony.

I bought a refurbished Dell Inspiron 1521, and Hardy installed and is
working wonderfully on it. All the hardware is fully supported, including
video, webcam, sound, dvd+-rw, sdcard reader, etc. The laptop has quickly
surpassed my workstation as my main computer.
