Well, in such an instance, sure, I'll be glad for their presence.

You do recall that during the 1992 LA riots, it was the Korean shop
owners who stood armed at the entrances to their businesses who did not
become the victims of looting.

And, in a mob scene environment, I won't be surprised if the police force
is overwhelmed by numbers.

At a fundamental level, protection is not their job. Unless you happen to
be one of the Eloi, who is "entitled" (hey, we're all equal, right?) to
such.
