I'll recommend dreamhost.com . I've used them for about five years.
They're pretty cheap: $9 or $10 a month with more features than I can
use.  Linux, shell, mail, ftp, 'unlimited' storage, MySQL, etc, etc.

And with hosting they'll give you one domain registration for free.
