It does not take much to put out an eye, and kids do escalate their
behavior and their weapons. Your boy sounds very normal to me, but a
normal boy will do dangerous things, without some guidance as to
safety measures (and even with guidance, sometimes: normal).

In the years surrounding 1900, various kinds of fencing were popular
sports. People started noticing that one-eyed fencers were more common
than was reasonable: thus the protective fencing mask became required.

Joining a club, whether internet or local, might save a boy from
experiencing the same kind of accident that other club members have
already suffered.
