Hey guys, I'll throw my two cents in here:  The stepping is actually one of
the numbers written on the processor itself.  So if all numbers match you
know you're in business.  But that may not actually be necessary becuase
other factors can vary and still be the same stepping.  Stepping is the
sequence of minor modifications or bug fixes made to the processor itself. 
So yes, I'd say absolutely the stepping would need to match.  Go to Intel's
web site.  There is an online document that shows how to read all the numbers
on your processors and gives all the stepping information.  Good luck.
