Carl,

I have been using the HP Colorado 5 GB for about two years (kernel 
2.2.x).  Here's how I use it:

1.  Install the ide-tape module:

$ cd /lib/module/*/block
$ insmode ide-tape

2. tar onto tape directly:

$ tar cvfP /dev/ht0 { files to back up }

3.  Validate archive:

$ tar dvf /dev/ht0
