I had this same problem with I started playing wtih the 2.4 kernels under 
RH. You may or may not have the RH7 compiler issues that I had but what 
cleared it up for me was compiling with kgcc instead of gcc. Just run this 
in the term you are compiling in:

CC=kgcc

Or you can change the makefile (I don't recall seeing a way to set this in 
the ./configure script).
