What I ended up doing is partioning the drive like this.

sda1 - ext2 / sda2 - FAT16
sdb1 - ext2 /usr

Did the install rebooted with the xl.img disk. Pointed MILO to sda1

MILO> boot sda1:/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1

This got the new install booted. Then did mkdosfs on /dev/sda2.
Copied the contents of the boot disk to sda2.

Went into the bios and told it to boot from disk(0) partition (1) linload.exe
Added the the line root=/dev/sda1 to the OSBOOTOPTIONS line

Rebooted and it worked.

Yea I did not do the fancy bios upgrade. I just wanted to get linux on the machine just to see that I could do it. Maybe later on I will update the bios to the SRM console.
