Ed,

I have not upgraded modutils. However, I had similar problems
upgrading rpm so that I could upgrade newer packages.

However, I have upgraded the stock rpm that comes with RH6.2 from
v.3.0.4 to v 3.0.5 by doing an incremental upgrade. I have not
gone beyond this because I have not found the need to do this.

You might want to try this before attempting other software
upgrades.
