Thanks, everyone, for your input. I wound up with an APC BackUPS650.
TrippLite has a 700VA model which is just slightly less expensive, but
comes without a serial cable (they have a mail-in card - allow 30 days
for delivery). TrippLite also does not have a toll-free phone number.
The lesser featured APC seemed to offer the most bang (VA rating) for
the buck -- $209 at MicroCenter.

FWIW, if I were working, I would have gone with a Fenton. I like a
company which links to GPL code from their website. They have a
toll-free phone answered by a person. Their in-state dealer is
Innovative Electronics, in Commerce City. (I haven't openned up the
PowerChute RPM from APC to if it's GPL.)
