weirder and weirder. I aliased out char-major-180, but not
char-major-4. I now occasionally, but not often, get the same login
problem. First time I did, I rebooted into console mode, couldnt
figure out anything to do, and rebooted into kde mode fine. Since
then, when I get the kde problem, I reboot to console, signin as
root, then reboot to kde. Something in that console boot is clearing
the problem, but I have no idea what.

thanks. Mandrake 8.0 puts it in /usr/share/doc/kernel-doc-2.4.3/
They also have a netdevices.txt file in the same directory.

4 is tty.
