I'm not sure *why*, but if the NIC is PCMCIA, there are commonly weird/
bad/annoying interactions between APM and the PCMCIA controller. You 
may already know this, but one or more APM features are flaky on many
laptops; the Linux Laptop Home Page will probably point you to info for
your model. If you find there are known problems, you'll have to compile
a kernel with those features disabled.
