imcom - I tried that one out, but it didn't compile, and I didn't dig any
further. Have you ever used it? There isn't a port for it in FreeBSD, but
I'll maybe take another crack at it if it's worth it.

An AIM client for Emacs...well, well. Who would have guessed? :) What's
funny is that JEdit is tending toward Emacs tendencies - there's an IRC
client for it, I believe?

Jabber - I've used it since the spring of 2000. It's not bad, but it has
some serious issues, not the least of which is that it's pretty hard to set
up. Pluses are that it supports SSL and that it is an open protocol, so it's
definitely a good effort.

This fall, I found EveryBuddy, and it rocks. Same cross-IM support as Jabber
w/o all the fuss - plus it works. In the months before I found Everybuddy,
neither Yahoo or ICQ transport worked consistently or at all. I didn't run
my own server, I used ones that were visible on www.jabberview.com.
