That is ARC, the 'wrong' firmware for *NIX.

Well, I just took a look at some doco on the NetBSD Port Alpha site, and 
apparently some Linux distros will work with ARC.

(The NetBSD Port Alpha site is the best source of Alpha doco I could 
find on the web, much of it relevant to Linux too)

Most of the doco I read suggested installing SRM.  The SRM firmware is here:  

http://ftp.digital.com/pub/DEC/Alpha/firmware/

The SRM installation doco is there too.
