I can second the SuSE recommendation; I use it on 2 home machines + my
notebook. I'm running reiserfs over LVM on all three + networked printer
via cups + samba. There network update works AOK too. Eventually it will
end up on the two Alphas I have yet to install...
I've rarely had to pull down a package from the web (unless I want recent
updates, which I do for python and vim).
My best story is when I needed to install a new notebook computer (fresh
out of box); finish some coding changes; AND fly to Wisconson. I started
the SuSE install (7.1) off of their DVD at DIA, packed the notebook up,
stowed it overhead, and worked on the plane with my other notebook. When
I landed and checked in, I was greeted with the GNOME login panel - it
found my PCMCIA modem card, network card, and sound card. I was truely
impressed.
