Something else to consider is that you might have a phone line that is 
going bad. I had one for a modem that was spliced just outside the room 
where my computer was and over the years had gotten water into it. 
Sometimes it would connect great and others barely at all.

Try checking your phone line by plugging a phone into the socket and see 
if you have a lot of static on it.
