I took a look again and it's the ext2online command from the LVM 
packages that
seems to have a problem. It may be that I'm running devfs that is 
causing the
device name mismatch. There is also a command that comes with e2fsprogs
called resize2fs that will resize filesystems. For both a fsck -f is 
required
prior to resizing. I've only resized upwards to this point but it 
appears to be
a fairly painless process to date (read no data loss) :-)
