Sounds to me like the tech support person was none to bright, huh?

I have found the tool iptraf to be very helpful in showing me network
link utilization.  With it, I have found that to servers run by my ISP, I
actully get 1.2 Mb / sec with my 640 Kb / sec DSL line :-)

You have to have some traffic on the wire though, iptraf does not do any
of its own.  It just monitors the existing network load.
