The easiest way to diagnose network/cableing issues is to manually set it to 10Mbps half-duplex.
This will solve any intermittent issues, as well as provide a solid troubleshooting platform. From there, bump it up to 10 Full then 100 half and continue to 100/Full to find where the problems begin.
