Well, probably too late but I see that djb recommends this:

Gigabyte GA-7DXE PC2100

for around $60.  See http://cr.yp.to/hardware/advice.html.  His primary 
concern is support for ECC memory it seems, and for his purposes the 
Athlon XP is the best CPU.

Dan's page seems to stay more current than esr's.
