Anecdotal evidence is that bogofilter works very well, IF fed enough data -
meaning LOTS of spam and lots of your own legitimate email.

Spamassassin works well because the rules are actively maintained by many
people.

I prefer to drop as much spam as possible before it is delivered to the 
server
by using well targeted dns based blacklists and a few local rules.  The most
egregious offenders get their own firewall rules.
