You're right, you can point your browser at a file structure on your own
system but then you need to be at the console to view the notes.  

Having a server is sooooo sweet.  I can e-mail the HTML index for the
presentation and you can seamlessly browse through the notes without
ever having to get up from your work area, without ever having to stop
to download a file.  

It's much better than PDF or Power Point.  The index is only a few kb.
It takes almost no bandwidth or disk space.  The rest of the
presentation is downloaded on an as needed basis, a few kb at a time.
Network impact is minimal. 

Compare that to a PDF or Power Point presentation that has to be
downloaded in it's entirety even if you only want to look at one or two
slides and the files are often huge.
