NOT Solved (was Re: Solved (was Re: [CLUE-Tech] MPU 401))

Oops. Flip-flop.

I made a mistaken assumption. With neither the mpu401 nor opl3 modules
loaded,

  $ playmidi <midi_file>

fails with something like '/dev/sequencer: no such device', and the -f
option doesn't make any difference. I found the other night that with
opl3 loaded, I could do

  $ playmidi -f <midi_file>

and I see today that with mpu401 and opl3 loaded,

  $ playmidi <midi_file>

works. Based on that I reckoned that /dev/sequencer must be working, but
that appears not to be true: another program that actually queries the
device fails trying to do that. And

  # cat /dev/mpu401stat
  cat: /dev/mpu401stat: No such device

So I guess I'm still looking for suggestions. Especially if anybody is
familiar with the various sound devices and how they interact. I've
looked at the MIDI HOWTO, but it doesn't go into enough detail.
