Actually, that makes some sense. The (Yamaha) OPL3 chip is a synthesizer.
In fact, I can't imagine any other sound functions working without it. Of
course, my memory could be a off, it's been a while since I played with
the CrystalSound board. Actually, now I think on it, I have some vague
memory of there being some conflicts with the mpu401 device. Do you have
anything in your boot log referring to it?

The really dumb question, based on your followup post, what is the output
of ls -l /dev/sequencer ?
