[CLUE-Tech] Debian kernel boot failure

I have a couple of boxes running Debian based on a Knoppix install. I
have essentially upgraded the boxes to unstable and I have experienced
very few problems (nothing I haven't been able to tackle myself).

However, I have been unable to install a kernel image on either
machine which will boot. I have noticed a couple of things.

I get a cpio error when installing the kernel while the initrd is
being built.

The kernel boots to the point of trying to mount the root filesystem
and then dies a terrible death.

Other details: I am booting from grub (which I have used successfully
for quite some time). The root filesystem is ext3 on both machines.

Googling around has not given me insights. I plan to continue looking
into the problem, but I was hoping someone on the list had seen
something similar.

(I am trying to get a barely supported wireless card working. I need
a kernel and matching headers to do so. Plus, I like to run the
latest stable kernel).
