ctrl-alt-backspace ungracefully kills X, no need to go through all that
stuff you're doing or become root or anything.

Well, of course it depends on the app and what you're wanting to do. ;)
Having said that, please let us know some specifics - what user you're
logged in as, if you're in X (GUI) or not, the app you want to run and
the user you want to run it as, is it an X app or not, stuff like that.

Oh, I don't know... 'term window' implies a term window in X, so I'm
assuming you want to find a list of X apps. How about something like:

$ ls -al /usr/X11R6/bin

to get ya started.
