Depending on *where* the GUI defect is (that is causing the freeze up),
this may not work.  If it doesn't, then ctrl+alt+F{1,2,3,...} and 
 $ kill -TERM X
or
 $ kill -KILL X
depending on how gracious you want to be :^)

This should return your system to either the GUI login screen (if you
boot to runlevel 5), or the X user's console (if you start X by hand).
