Also of not is this error message which leads me to think that I have a
problem with my PAM configuration:

could not open /etc/pam.conf

initialize handlers
Jan  2 17:09:19 curly postfix/smtpd[24009]: warning:
localhost[127.0.0.1]: SASL plain authentication failed

I got this with this session:

and the command I used to generate the Base64 encode is:

Again, this is RH 7.3. Has anybody seen this problem enough to have
solved it?
