Are you using KDE? If so, you probably have kdm (KDE display manager)
running the graphical login sessions. kdm has its own configuration
mechanism, separate from the normal XFree86 stuff. Unfortunately I
haven't used KDE lately, so I can't remember exactly how to tweak that.
