In SuSE you can run sax2 to do all your X configuration.  Yes, you can
just copy the XF86Config from safe mode over the other one, but I would
run sax2 and see if twiddling with the configuration that-a-way helps.

I would suspect that the safe mode settings are not nearly optimal for
your hardware...
